Kara is Fucking Awesome
I would like to tell you a story.
This morning (well Wednesday morning, I'm up late writing for you guys because I care) I woke up totally rested and refreshed. All I could think was man, I feel great, I never wake up before my alarm.
I cover my clock before bed because I find the clock is too bright for me to sleep, so I got up and pulled my shirt off of it to look at it. 11:38.
Hmm. Must be Saturday. I always sleep in late on Saturday.
I put on my shirt as my brain keeps working.
Hey wait a minute, it's not Saturday. I'm going home this weekend.
There's a little pause here while my brain finds the thrilling conclusion to this thought process.
That means it's a weekday. It's 11:38 on a weekday and I was supposed to be at work more than 3 hours ago!
Yeah. About that.
I called Kara (my boss) and she wasn't at her desk because she was in training from 10:00 for the rest of the day. So I left a message and got ready for work. I ended up getting there at 12:20.
Paul was the only one in our area when I got there, I think he thought I was sick that morning or something. I was like "no, my alarm just didn't go off." He replied with "no worries man," and proceeded with giving me something to do. Paul's a good guy.
When Mike got back from lunch he came in with the classic line "little late this morning?" Of course, then he tells me that he didn't even notice I hadn't come in until noon. We sit right beside each other, there isn't even a wall between us. He just assumed I was off somewhere doing something. The only reason he figured out I wasn't there was because when the other co-ops came to have lunch together he checked and saw that my boots weren't at my desk. Good times.
Paul and Mike are co-workers so I didn't really expect much fall-out from them.
So around 5:00 Kara (the aforementioned boss) gets done her training and comes back to her desk. She's just coming by to check her messages and grab her coat before she leaves for the night, and I wait to get asked about my morning whereabouts. She checked my message, and then asked "was that you who left that message on my phone?" (It was my cell number, so it didn't show my name)
I responded with "yeah, that was me."
She comes back with "so what happened with you this morning?" Not mad or accusatory, just a curious tone.
I basically just explained my morning thought process like I did at the beginning of this post. She laughs and replies with "that's hilarious! Well, have a good night guys."
And she leaves. That's it. No lecture on coming late. No "don't let it happen again." Not even a "make sure you make up the time you missed." Just "that's hilarious."
Which brings me back to this post's title. Kara is fucking awesome.
I ended up staying at work until 7:45 since there were things to do and I wanted to still get the full day. But the thing is, I didn't do it because I was told to. I didn't do it because I was threatened. I did it because if I didn't do it my boss would have to, and she didn't give me a hard time even though I was ridiculously late for work. She knew I didn't mean to be late, and left it alone.
Now that's good management. I've never had a boss like that before, and I'm pretty sure my readership hasn't either. It's that whole "trust system of management."
And the thing is, I didn't take advantage of it. I've been keeping her posted on the extra hours I work this term so that I get paid for some of the time I have to take off at the end of the term. I just put a little note in there (-1 hours, came late and worked 12:30-7:30).
There should be more bosses like that.
Sorry folks, no picture.

I wish my boss was like that.
I have not gotten paid yet.
Nice to hear buddy, I really wish my work was like that... The people there are really stuck up and true to the system.
If you come in late it's an automatic "ding" on your attendance record. They mark you FOR LIFE.
Oh and did I mention... If you get too many of those they will kick you out. I've even found that doing what you did (calling in to let them know you will be late) doesn't get rid of that ding. It sucks, really.
I got my review the other day and finished with a status of "Needs Improvement" I really got screwed since I was going to school and working full time last year, there were a lot of late occurrences because of that.
What kind of raise did I get? $0!
I don't really care, any job that allows me to play video games and watch movies while I'm at work is fine by me. It's not like I deserve the raise anyway haha.
If you have free time at work I'd browse over to the better business bureau website there Jordan.
Seriously, I think they might be breaking some major laws.
Well, I think step 1 would be to ASK for a cheque... (Who knows? maybe there's a legitimate reason)
I know at UnitWay, I think they routinely held back two weeks of pay, AND waited for you to get on-cycle (I believe...)
So, say they pay at week 2 and week 4 in a month. If you came in on week 1, you wouldn't see any money until week 4, and even then you would only get paid for one week of work.
The two week hold back was to make sure that you were always getting paid for work you HAD done, never getting paid for work you hadn't done yet.
If he REFUSES, then I would start raising hell.

Also, your boss IS fucking awesome.
Binkle, I've been with Liberty for two months. He said I'd be paid by the end of this week, but it hasn't happened. We haven't even been able to fill out proper time sheets all month (I've kept my hours logged in a book I bring to work).
As for that two week hold, I'm not sure if I completely understand the reason behind it, but we are facing something similar with not getting paid for training. So, that accounts for the bulk of January. But I've done the calculations and I'm missing out on almost two grand in gross pay. I've been working 7 day work weeks. And I've received no compensation.
There is no legitimate reason. He's just forgetful...which isn't legitimate.
Also, that United Way system sounds ridiculous. I haven't heard of anyone doing that...seems a little ridiculous. I think at Zellers there was something kind of like that...but we got our pay cheques on a Thursday for the previous two weeks, and not the week we were currently in.
But I don't know. All I know is that my employee contract says I should have been paid by now, and so he has violated it.
